Carvalho Fisheries began in 1990. Founder Bill Carvalho participated in various aspects of the West Coast seafood business involving Dungeness crab, salmon, rockfish and albacore tuna.
In 1998 Bill began producing locally caught canned albacore tuna with the same “home-style” process that his Portuguese family had done for decades. Bill grew up packing the pure cleaned tuna loins into glass canning jars without any added liquid. The Carvalho brand albacore tuna became available in 2001. This product has been sold locally in Northern California and online ever since. But, the entry into this ‘home-style’ tuna led to a business bigger than he ever imagined.
In 2004, Bill along with Chief Operations Officer Bill McCarthy launched a new company whose focus would be on what was at the time called “eco-friendly” seafood (now called sustainably sourced seafood). The company is Wild Planet Foods. That new brand name encapsulated the mission of harvesting wild food in a way that retains the healthy wildness of the planet. Since then, the Wild Planet company has grown to be the fourth largest brand of canned seafood in the U.S. Wild Planet albacore tuna is produced with the same ‘home-style’ process as the original Carvalho Fisheries brand.
In 2008, Carvalho Fisheries and Wild Planet merged into one company.
